Background and Requirements


Recently, a foaming agent manufacturer proposed a requirement to further expand the volume of PVC foaming regulator powder with an initial density of 0.45 g/cm³ to maximize volume expansion for specific product process needs.  

PVC foaming regulator is an acrylic processing aid with ultra-high molecular weight and excellent melt strength, significantly enhancing cell uniformity and low-density properties in PVC foamed products. It is widely used in foamed boards, pipes, profiles, and other applications.


Customer Pain Points


The density of PVC foaming regulators typically ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 g/cm³, and drying is commonly done using spray dryer or drum dryer during production. However, further expansion faces the following challenges:  

- Limitations of Hot Air Drying: Conventional hot air dryers cannot precisely control the expansion of the foaming regulator. Strong airflow easily damages the microporous structure, and ultra-low-density powders may generate significant dust, increasing explosion risks.  

- Low-Density Target: The goal is to reduce density to extremely low levels (e.g., <0.05 g/cm³) while maintaining particle uniformity and performance stability.  

So the customer considered testing by our vacuum screw dryer.


Advantages of our Hollow Screw Vacuum Dryer


The hollow screw vacuum dryer reduces environmental pressure and uses heat to promote moisture evaporation in the raw material powder, achieving an expansion effect. In the expansion process of PVC foaming regulator powder, the advantages of vacuum drying include:  

- Efficient Expansion: The vacuum environment accelerates the release of internal gases and loosens the structure, significantly reducing expansion time.  

- Uniform Heating: The unique spiral structure prevents localized overheating or uneven expansion, ensuring consistent heating of the foaming regulator.  

- Dust Control: Equipped with a nitrogen back-blow device, it effectively removes dust from the filter, preventing blockages at the exhaust port and reducing dust explosion risks.  

- Safety and Environmental Compliance: The vacuum environment minimizes oxidation and high-temperature degradation, ensuring stable product performance and meeting environmental standards.


Experimental Results


Upon the customer’s request, we conducted multiple small-scale experiments using efficient vacuum drying technology. With a set temperature of 180°C and after preheating the machine, each batch was processed for approximately 40 minutes. The density of the raw material powder was consistently reduced to around 0.02 g/cm³, achieving approximately 22.5 times volume expansion.
